Enterprising is simply a way of describing how we are changing the way we work and putting value for money at the heart of everything we do.

Our budget is reducing every year and the number of older people, people with dementia and children at risk is rising.

But it's not all about saving money. It's about providing 21st century services that local people want and need.

It is important to change as the world changes, to modernise and take advantage of new technology and better ways of doing things both for our residents and our employees.

Our Senior Planning Officer, Vicky Webb talks about what Enterprising Council means to her.

Enterprising Council is about finding the best way of providing services whether that's in-house or in partnership with other organisations.

There is no one size fits all.

Enterprising Council in action - Children's Services Commissioning Manager, James Gracey talks about bringing the care leavers service back in-house.

Work has already started to look for better ways of delivering services and...

  • Put customers first
  • Improve staff training and support and give them greater freedom to make decisions
  • Look for budget savings and new ways to generate income.

How long will it take?

Being enterprising is an ongoing process. It will become part of our DNA to…

- Constantly look for opportunities

- Make the best of our resources

- Make sure services provide value for money.

Councillor Barry Lewis, Leader of Derbyshire County Council.

“Enterprising Council is a bold and innovative plan to modernise and transform the way we deliver services for the people that we serve.
Over the next five years we need to save £63.2m which is a major portion of our overall budget.

“Quite simply the status quo is no longer an option. If we are to make these savings, while protecting and improving services that matter to our community the most, then we have to do things in a different way.

“There is no fixed view on how services should be delivered because it’s about tapping into the talents and creativity of our own staff, our partners, our contractors and our community, with one thing and one thing only in mind: protecting and improving life in our county while delivering value for money.

“At times it may not be easy, and it certainly won’t happen overnight. But I’m confident that we can rise to the challenge and I’m excited by the possibilities that lie ahead as we look for better ways of providing the services that people rely on.

“Thank you all for your continued hard work and dedication.”
